What makes it different
Every question is human-verified.
Most "AI math apps" use AI to generate questions on the fly. The trouble: when the AI hallucinates a wrong answer, your kid gets graded on it. Numbat Math takes the opposite bet — 450+ human-verified questions at launch, growing to 1,500 by end of summer. AI is used for one thing only: explaining why a wrong answer was wrong.
The AI tutor doesn't give the answer.
When a kid taps "Explain" on a wrong answer, the tutor first delivers a gentle nudge — a question, not a solution. If the kid taps again, it walks through the reasoning. Only at the third level does the full step-by-step appear. This mirrors how the best human tutors scaffold: nudge, walk-through, walk-through-with-everything-shown.
The adaptive engine over-weights weak topics.
Education research is unambiguous: practicing what a kid is already good at has near-zero learning yield. If a kid scores 95% on fractions and 60% on word problems, today's session is mostly word problems. The dashboard tells parents which specific skills need attention each week — not vanity metrics like total questions.
Honest pricing, no surprises.
The hero SKU is a one-time $29.99 Summer Pass that runs through Sept 30 — no auto-renew. Optional monthly and annual subscriptions are available for year-round use, but the app is explicitly designed so a family can pay once for the summer and walk away.
Founder story
Yousef and Sanad LLC is named after the founder's two boys. Numbat Math is the studio's first app. Numbat the mascot is an Australian marsupial — the founders picked an animal nobody else was using to give the brand room to grow.
The app came out of a personal need: the founders couldn't find a math practice app they were willing to put in front of their own kids. The AI-generated-questions problem was the dealbreaker, but so was the dopamine-treadmill design language most kids' education apps share. They built Numbat Math the way they'd want a teacher to design it: a tight daily loop, honest about progress, gentle about mistakes.

Story angles
- The "summer slide" defense. U.S. kids lose 2–3 months of math learning over summer break; teachers spend September re-teaching. A 10-minute-a-day practice app is the structural fix parents have been asking for.
- The indie alternative to AI-generated-questions apps. A reaction to the wave of math apps where the questions themselves are LLM-generated. Numbat Math draws the line at human-verified content.
- COPPA-conscious AI for kids. AI tutoring without sending the kid's name, age, or any identifier to the model. A worked example for journalists covering the "AI safety for kids" beat.
- Indie founder story. Two-person Texas studio competing in a category dominated by venture-backed apps with eight-figure marketing budgets.
